Tanzania President John Magufuli dies at 61

The news of Magufuli’s death came following weeks of wild speculations after he went missing from the public eye for more than three weeks.

The Tanzanian leader passed away on Wednesday, March 17 , according to an announcement made by Vice President Samia Suluhu.

Magufuli, the fifth president of Tanzania, was re-elected into office under his Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) political party in October 2020 after a highly contested presidential election

Magufuli made headlines in 2020 after notwithstanding taking advantage of COVID-19 control measures insisting that, East African nation had conquered the deadly virus.

In April 2020, his government stopped the issuance of COVID-19 data to the public and weeks later, he stated Tanzania was coronavirus-free thanks to divine intervention.

“We decided to pray to God to save us from COVID-19, He has answered our prayers. Tanzania is safe, which is evident by the many airlines that are bringing in tourists,” he said.
